Some people Walk In the Rain, others just get wet

Peat Bog Conservation
Peatlands are important to the UK and Global ecosystem as they are home to many rare plants, insects and birds and act as huge carbon stores.
Unfortunately peatlands around the world are disappearing and in the UK, at least 80% of peatland habitats have been lost or damaged.
Since 2020 I have been engaged with multiple projects across Lancashire trying to improve the water retention capabilities and reduce erosion. These projects not only help support the health of the bogs themselves, they
-
support increased growth of peat producing vegetation
-
reduce flash flooding in lowland / urban areas,
-
reduce soil erosion and
-
improve water quality in the water-ways and domestic supply networks
The work focuses on
-
installation of timber dams and baffles to reduce water flow and erosion
-
installation of stone dams and baffles to reducewater flow and erosion
-
installation of geomatting to protect exposed areas of peat and support seed capture and vegetation regrowth, and
-
planting of spagnum moss to kickstart peat production
